In a bid to address urban housing challenges and enhance living standards, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is embarking on a significant initiative to redevelop the Rama Nagar slum pocket situated along the Eastern Express Highway in Ghatkopar.
This ambitious project, jointly undertaken with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), aims to revitalise the urban landscape and provide improved housing solutions for slum dwellers while accommodating those displaced by ongoing infrastructure projects in Mumbai. MMRDA has taken proactive steps to advance this redevelopment endeavour by initiating the process to appoint an architectural and project management consultant (PMC) through a competitive bidding process. The selected consultant will play a pivotal role in providing expert guidance and oversight throughout the redevelopment project, ensuring efficient execution and adherence to quality standards. Under the purview of the SRA, a comprehensive survey of the slum dwellers residing in the Ramabai Nagar area will be conducted to assess their needs and preferences. Additionally, SRA will be tasked with facilitating the seamless transfer of vacant possession of the land earmarked for redevelopment to MMRDA, laying the foundation for subsequent construction activities.
Ramabai Nagar spans over 33.15 hectares of land and is home to approximately 16,575 slum tenements. Through the redevelopment initiative, these residents will benefit from improved living conditions and upgraded housing facilities. Furthermore, MMRDA aims to construct 5,000 new tenements to accommodate individuals displaced by various infrastructure projects underway in Mumbai, thereby addressing social welfare concerns and promoting inclusive urban development. The appointment of a consultant marks a significant milestone in MMRDA’s efforts to transform Ramabai Nagar and enhance urban resilience in Mumbai. By leveraging expert insights and adopting a collaborative approach with stakeholders, MMRDA is poised to realise its vision of creating sustainable and vibrant urban communities that prioritise equitable access to housing and amenities for all residents.
