In a significant stride towards enhancing Mumbai’s transportation infrastructure, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is currently in the process of constructing a 550-metre-long underpass as part of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP).
This strategic underpass, situated between Worli Seaface and the Worli interchange, is designed to streamline the movement of southbound vehicles travelling from Prabhadevi or Worli towards Nariman Point. Positioned strategically within the MCRP framework, this underpass represents a crucial addition to Mumbai’s road network. It serves as the second underground road project within the ambit of the MCRP, complementing the existing undersea tunnels connecting Marine Drive and Priyadarshini Park. The underpass’s construction aligns with BMC’s vision to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity along Mumbai’s coastal areas.
The underpass’s entry point near JK Kapur Chowk in Worli and its exit point at Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk will provide seamless integration with the coastal road, facilitating efficient traffic flow for commuters. Motorists travelling from Prabhadevi or Worli will benefit from direct access to the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) and the main southbound carriageway of the MCRP, enabling swift transit towards Nariman Point and other destinations. Construction efforts are currently underway, with BMC aiming to complete the underpass and make it operational by October. This development is part of the broader phase two rollout of the MCRP, scheduled for completion by May 2024. The underpass, constructed using the conventional Austrian tunnelling method, will run beneath the Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, offering a seamless transit route parallel to the Worli Seaface. With an estimated cost of Rs 13,000 crore, the MCRP encompasses a length of 10.58 kilometres and includes three vehicular interchanges, emphasising BMC’s commitment to enhancing accessibility and connectivity across Mumbai’s coastal regions. As Mumbai gears up for transformative infrastructural upgrades, the introduction of the underpass underscores BMC’s dedication to driving progress and addressing the city’s evolving transportation needs.
