MHADA Tardeo Women Hostel Tender to Be Issued Within 15 Days

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) will issue a tender within 15 days for a 23-storey hostel for working women at Tardeo in Mumbai, according to senior officials from its Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board. The proposed facility is expected to provide accommodation for 860 women.

The tender proposal received approval from the MHADA vice-president, clearing the way for the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board to begin the procurement process. Officials told Loksatta that the tender would be issued within 15 days and that construction would begin as soon as the tender process is completed.

The hostel is planned within the redevelopment of a transit camp at the MP Mill Compound in Tardeo. MHADA’s Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board has taken up the project as part of the redevelopment of the existing camp site.

The proposal was approved at MHADA’s 298th meeting. The authority has sanctioned an estimated project cost of Rs 65.80 crore, while the Housing Department has also granted permission for the proposal, according to the report.

MHADA had decided in 2021 to build the hostel in Tardeo. The project is intended to provide working women with accommodation at affordable rates in a city where housing costs can make both home ownership and private rental accommodation difficult to afford.

Mumbai attracts young women and other workers from across India for employment and livelihood opportunities. The planned hostel is aimed at addressing the shortage of affordable accommodation for this group, particularly in a city where proximity to workplaces can significantly affect household budgets and daily travel requirements.

The project is being implemented through the redevelopment of the MP Mill Compound transit camp rather than on a separate greenfield site. This places the hostel within MHADA’s broader redevelopment and housing-management responsibilities in central Mumbai.

The immediate next step is the issuance of the construction tender within the stated 15-day period. MHADA officials said the construction work would be taken up after the tender process is completed, although the report did not provide a construction completion date or details of the proposed allocation and operating system for the 860 beds.
