The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has removed around 42 structures built over an existing drain in Raghubir Nagar’s B-1 and K blocks, reclaiming 505 square metres of land and clearing the way for a proposed drainage project.
The demolition was carried out by the MCD’s West Zone team in coordination with the Delhi Police in Ward 94. According to the civic body, the structures had obstructed construction of a new drain planned for the locality and funded through the Chief Minister’s Development Fund (CMDF).
The MCD said several multi-storey structures had been constructed over the existing drain and adjoining land, preventing the proposed infrastructure work from proceeding. The corporation had issued multiple notices asking occupants to remove the encroachments and facilitate the project, but the structures remained in place.
During the operation, MCD field staff, assisted by police personnel, cleared the structures occupying the drain corridor and adjacent land. The civic body said the operation concluded peacefully with the cooperation of its field teams and the Delhi Police.
The clearance of 505 square metres is expected to allow the next stage of the drainage project to move forward. The action also forms part of the MCD’s enforcement efforts against unauthorised occupation of public land and obstructions affecting essential civic infrastructure.
The proposed drain is intended to improve drainage capacity in the Raghubir Nagar locality, where construction over the existing drain had prevented the corporation from carrying out the planned work. The MCD has said that removing the structures was necessary before construction could begin.
However, the corporation has not specified when work on the new drainage system will start or announced a completion timeline. The next stage will depend on the project’s implementation through the Chief Minister’s Development Fund and the availability of the cleared corridor for construction.
