The Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch has arrested an MCD billing clerk for allegedly accepting a ₹10,000 instalment from a retired municipal employee’s family in connection with the release of a pension fund, with investigators also examining the possible role of an assistant commissioner and other employees.
The accused clerk, identified as Sanjay, was arrested at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s eastern zone office complex in Patparganj Industrial Area, according to officials cited in the report. The Anti-Corruption Branch registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and arrested him after the alleged payment was made.
The case began with a complaint from Jitendra, whose father Salek Chand had worked as a sanitation employee with the corporation before retiring on September 30, 2024. The report said that the pension fund had not been released for nearly two years. Sanjay allegedly demanded ₹70,000 to facilitate its release and accepted ₹10,000 as the first instalment.
After receiving the complaint, the ACB conducted a verification exercise and formed a police team. The complainant was then asked to reach the eastern zone office with the money on Monday. The ACB team allegedly caught Sanjay while he was accepting the cash.
The arrested clerk has been sent to 14 days of judicial custody. Another employee who was initially detained was later released after investigators did not find evidence of involvement, according to the report. The role of another person, identified as Saket, is also being examined.
The investigation is additionally focused on an assistant commissioner who had previously served in the eastern zone. The report said Jitendra had allegedly approached the official about the delayed pension payment, but no action was taken. The ACB is examining whether the assistant commissioner had any role in the alleged demand and is expected to question the official along with another employee.
The case highlights the administrative vulnerability of pension processing, where delays in releasing retirement benefits can leave former civic workers dependent on multiple levels of departmental scrutiny. In this instance, the alleged demand concerned the pension fund of a former sanitation worker, a benefit linked to years of municipal service and retirement security.
The arrest does not establish the guilt of the accused clerk or any other official under investigation. The allegations against Sanjay and the possible involvement of other employees will be tested through the legal and investigative process. The ACB’s next steps include questioning the officials whose roles are under scrutiny and continuing the investigation into the pension payment process.
