Mangaluru Urban Forests Gain Momentum Across City

Mangaluru is expanding its urban greening efforts through native-species forests, biodiversity restoration and ecological buffers, with a new plantation phase beginning at the Pachanady green buffer zone. The initiative signals a shift from conventional tree-planting towards denser ecological interventions that can strengthen urban biodiversity while addressing environmental pressures around infrastructure and waste-processing areas.

The latest phase involves planting around 1,600 saplings using the Miyawaki method, a technique that places multiple native species closely together to establish dense vegetation over a relatively small area. The approach is increasingly being considered for constrained urban sites where conventional forests may require substantially more land. The Pachanady intervention is particularly relevant because green buffers can serve more than an aesthetic purpose. Vegetation around waste-processing infrastructure can help create a physical separation between operational sites and surrounding neighbourhoods, while also providing habitat for birds, insects and other species. However, the effectiveness of such buffers will depend on long-term maintenance, species selection and survival rates rather than planting numbers alone. The broader programme has been underway since 2021, with an annual six-month planting period between April and September. Earlier work at Deralakatte included about 3,500 saplings representing more than 200 native Western Ghats species, alongside shrubs and vetiver grass intended to stabilise soil along canal embankments. Additional planting has taken place at educational campuses.

The focus on native vegetation is significant for a coastal city whose ecological systems are closely linked to the Western Ghats and Arabian Sea landscapes. Native species can provide food and shelter for local wildlife while being better suited to regional climatic conditions than ornamental varieties. Urban forestry, therefore, can become part of wider biodiversity planning rather than remaining a standalone beautification exercise.Mangaluru’s growing urban footprint makes this distinction increasingly important. New construction, roads and other hard surfaces can fragment natural habitats and reduce the land available for ecological functions. Strategically placed green areas can help reconnect fragmented landscapes, improve shade and contribute to local temperature regulation. The next planned expansion is expected to move beyond urban forest plots. A large mangrove plantation programme targeting 40,000 saplings is scheduled to begin next month, extending the focus towards coastal ecosystems. For urban planners, the larger test will be whether these projects become durable ecological assets.

Monitoring survival rates, protecting planted areas from future construction and linking forests with drains, wetlands, canals and coastal habitats could make greening investments more effective. As Mangaluru grows, the value of urban forests will ultimately be measured not by the number of saplings planted but by whether they survive, mature and become functioning parts of the city’s ecological infrastructure.
