AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has urged Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to name Warangal’s Mamnoor airport after freedom fighter Maulvi Syed Alauddin, days after the state government invited public suggestions for the airport’s name.
In a letter to the chief minister, Owaisi proposed “Maulvi Syed Alauddin Airport” and described Alauddin as a prominent freedom fighter from the undivided Warangal district. The proposal is one of the suggestions submitted after Revanth Reddy asked people to recommend a suitable name for the airport.
Owaisi’s letter said Mamnoor airport was built in the 1930s under the rule of the Nizams to serve Warangal’s paper industry. The airport is located in Warangal and is being considered in the context of the region’s air connectivity and transport infrastructure.
According to Owaisi, Alauddin participated in the 1857 revolt against British rule and was associated with resistance to British authority in Hyderabad. He said Alauddin and Turrebaz Khan led resistance against the British Residency in Hyderabad on July 17, 1857.
“Alauddin, along with Turrebaz Khan, led the historic resistance against the British Residency in Hyderabad on July 17, 1857. Alauddin was subsequently imprisoned at the cellular jail. His contribution is significant to Hyderabad and south India’s role in the freedom struggle,” Owaisi stated in the letter.
The MP said naming the airport after Alauddin would recognise his contribution and sacrifice. He described the proposed name as a fitting tribute to a figure connected with Hyderabad’s resistance during the 1857 uprising.
The naming proposal comes as the Telangana government seeks public input on the airport’s identity. The supplied report does not indicate that the chief minister or the state government has accepted Owaisi’s recommendation, nor does it specify a final timeline for a decision.
Mamnoor airport’s history is linked to Warangal’s industrial development.
