Malkajgiri Launches Four-Bin Waste Segregation Drive Ahead of Ganesh Immersion

Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation has introduced four-bin waste segregation across its jurisdiction and launched an initiative to convert discarded flowers into organic products, with awareness campaigns being intensified ahead of Ganesh idol immersion.

The civic body’s Commissioner, T Vinay Krishna Reddy, urged residents to separate household waste into four bins before handing it over for collection. He said segregation at source would allow waste to be managed more scientifically and directed the Swachh Bharat Mission team to conduct awareness activities across the municipal area.

The new system places the household at the first stage of the waste-management process. Instead of receiving mixed waste, collection and processing systems are expected to handle different waste streams separately after residents sort them before disposal. The municipal corporation has not specified in the supplied announcement what categories each of the four bins will represent.

The civic body has also started the ‘Floral Waste to Organic Products’ initiative. Under the programme, residents will be encouraged to collect discarded flowers separately rather than mix them with other household waste. Reddy said the segregated floral waste could then be scientifically processed into useful organic products.

The initiative is particularly relevant during the ongoing Ganesh idol immersion period, when large quantities of flowers and other ritual material can enter the municipal waste stream around immersion locations. The corporation’s campaign will cover floral-waste handling, four-bin segregation, cleanliness and environmental protection.

To support the outreach effort, MMC unveiled a mascot designed to explain waste segregation to children, young people and other sections of society. The corporation also flagged off three campaign vehicles fitted with LED screens. These vehicles will visit major immersion points during the festival period to carry messages on segregation and waste handling.

Reddy directed the Swachh Bharat Mission team to undertake widespread awareness work in line with Supreme Court directions and Swachh Bharat Mission-2026 guidelines. The direction places the campaign within the wider framework of source segregation and civic cleanliness rather than treating it only as a festival-related exercise.

The effectiveness of the four-bin system will depend on how consistently households separate waste and how the municipal collection and processing arrangements handle the segregated material after pickup. The announcement does not provide details on the number of households covered, the collection schedule, the processing facilities to be used, or the categories assigned to each bin.

For residents, the immediate change is the request to sort household waste before handing it to the civic body and to keep floral waste separate. The next phase of the municipal campaign will focus on reaching residents at major Ganesh immersion points through the three LED-equipped vehicles and the corporation’s mascot-led awareness programme.
