The Panvel Municipal Corporation has directed contractors to expedite work on two free dialysis centres in Kharghar and New Panvel, with the facilities planned to provide up to 200 treatments a day once operational.
PMC Additional Commissioner Ganesh Shete inspected both facilities on September 21 along with senior civic officials and reviewed the progress of the ongoing work. The civic body has instructed contractors to complete the pending construction and related works at the earliest.
The centres are being developed at Plot No 17 in Sector 36, Kharghar, and G1 in Sector 6, New Panvel. Each facility will have 25 beds and is planned to operate in three shifts. According to the PMC, each centre could treat up to 100 patients daily, giving the two units a combined planned capacity of 200 patients a day.
The civic body said the centres will offer free dialysis services to eligible patients suffering from kidney-related ailments. The facilities are planned to include modern dialysis machines and ICU-level facilities, along with nephrologists, dialysis doctors, trained dialysis technicians and nurses.
The PMC expects the centres to treat around 600 patients a week. Eligible patients may receive dialysis three times a week, depending on their treatment requirements. The civic body said the planned capacity could help reduce waiting periods for patients who require regular dialysis two to three times a week.
Each 25-bed centre will reserve five beds for patients with infectious diseases, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. Two beds at each facility will be earmarked for pregnant women and children, while another two will be reserved for current and former PMC employees.
The facilities will also be linked to the civic ambulance service. If a patient’s condition becomes critical during treatment, the ambulance service will shift the patient to a government hospital, with the civic medical team following up on the case, according to the PMC.
Shete’s inspection was attended by PMC Chief Engineer Rajesh Kardile, Chief Medical Health Officer Dr Anand Gosavi, engineers, civic officials, consultants and contractors. The inspection focused on the remaining work at both dialysis centres and the need to accelerate completion.
During the same visit, Shete inspected the under-construction 15 million litre per day water recycling treatment facility at Kamothe, which is being developed as part of sewage treatment infrastructure. Officials were instructed to expedite the remaining work so that the facility can be completed at the earliest.
