Maharashtra is set to strengthen its rail infrastructure with the approval of a new chord line designed to improve network efficiency around the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The proposed Somtane–Chikhli rail connection is expected to ease congestion on one of western India’s busiest transport corridors, enhancing freight movement while creating long-term opportunities to improve passenger rail services and regional connectivity. The Maharashtra Rail Connectivity project will establish a direct railway link between two existing corridors that currently require trains to pass through congested sections near Panvel. By creating an alternative alignment, the new route is expected to reduce operational bottlenecks, improve scheduling flexibility and increase overall network capacity as freight and passenger demand continues to grow.
Rail infrastructure experts note that while the project has been conceived primarily to support freight operations, its wider benefits could extend to commuter and long-distance passenger services. Diverting freight traffic away from saturated junctions can create additional train paths for passenger operations, improving punctuality and enhancing the efficiency of the broader railway network. Panvel has evolved into one of the region’s most significant transport gateways, connecting Mumbai with Pune, the Konkan coast, Goa and several destinations across western India. As urbanisation accelerates and major infrastructure projects reshape the surrounding metropolitan region, increasing pressure on the junction has highlighted the need for additional rail capacity. The Maharashtra Rail Connectivity initiative is expected to distribute traffic more evenly across the network, reducing dependence on a single interchange. The project also carries broader economic implications. Improved freight mobility is expected to strengthen connectivity with logistics hubs, industrial corridors and port infrastructure serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Transport economists suggest that faster cargo movement can lower logistics costs, improve supply chain reliability and enhance the competitiveness of manufacturing and export-oriented industries operating across western India.
