Maharashtra Out-of-State Vehicles Face 13-Day Enforcement Drive

The Maharashtra Transport Department has ordered a 13-day statewide inspection drive against vehicles registered in other states but regularly used in Maharashtra, with checks scheduled from October 5 to October 17 and action possible against owners who have not completed required registration or tax formalities.

The campaign was ordered by Transport Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, according to an order reported by Mid-Day. Officials have been directed to identify vehicles that have remained in Maharashtra for more than one year and verify whether they comply with the state’s registration and taxation requirements.

Under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, vehicles registered in another state and kept in Maharashtra beyond the permitted period are required to be re-registered in the state. Enforcement teams will examine registration documents and other available evidence to establish how long an out-of-state vehicle has been operating in Maharashtra.

The department’s order directs teams to conduct inspections through squads and nakas at locations where such vehicles are likely to be regularly used. These include metropolitan areas, industrial zones, residential complexes, malls and other identified locations across the state.

Where violations are detected, vehicle owners will be required to comply with the applicable Maharashtra registration and tax provisions. Officials have also been instructed to take action against vehicles liable for re-registration and payment of taxes, including detention where warranted under the rules.

The drive will be monitored through a daily digital reporting system. Enforcement teams have been asked to maintain records on a Google Sheet, including vehicle registration numbers, action taken, the number of vehicles detained and the amount of tax recovered.

The department will consolidate the information collected during the campaign and submit a report to the Transport Commissioner’s office after the enforcement exercise concludes on October 17. The drive is intended to identify vehicles brought into Maharashtra from other states that continue to be used here without completing the required registration and tax procedures.
