West Bengal has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to reintroduce and modernise Kolkata’s historic tram network, signalling a broader shift towards lower-emission public transport while seeking to improve urban connectivity. The proposed Kolkata tram revival includes new corridors, upgraded rolling stock and cleaner propulsion technology, placing sustainable mobility back at the centre of the city’s long-term transport strategy.
State transport authorities have indicated that future trams are expected to incorporate battery-powered systems and air-conditioned coaches, reducing reliance on conventional overhead electrical infrastructure. Officials are also examining the feasibility of expanding services beyond the traditional city core into emerging urban districts such as Rajarhat-New Town and Salt Lake, where rapid residential and commercial growth has intensified demand for efficient public transport.Among the proposals under consideration is a new tram corridor connecting the Dakshineswar and Kalighat temple precincts, a route that could support both daily commuting and heritage tourism. Urban mobility specialists note that integrating cultural destinations with public transport can diversify travel demand while reducing dependence on private vehicles, provided services remain reliable and well connected with metro and bus networks.
The Kolkata tram revival comes after years of declining operations that left only a handful of routes functional despite the city’s status as home to Asia’s oldest electric tram system. Successive reductions in services reflected mounting road congestion, ageing infrastructure and changing travel patterns. Transport planners now argue that modern low-floor, energy-efficient trams operating within redesigned corridors could help address these historical constraints rather than merely restore legacy infrastructure.However, infrastructure experts caution that introducing modern tram services will require more than replacing vehicles. Dedicated operating space, redesigned intersections, improved pedestrian access and seamless interchange with other public transport modes will be critical if trams are to contribute meaningfully to reducing congestion and emissions. Without broader street redesign and traffic management reforms, the environmental and mobility benefits may remain limited. Public discussions have similarly highlighted concerns over road capacity while acknowledging the potential gains from expanding sustainable transport options.The wider transport strategy also includes strengthening state bus services through additional electric and compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, reflecting a multi-modal approach to cleaner urban mobility. Analysts believe combining electrified buses with modern tram operations could improve network resilience while offering commuters greater travel choices across rapidly expanding neighbourhoods.
As planning progresses, the effectiveness of the initiative will depend on detailed route studies, infrastructure investment and operational integration rather than nostalgia alone. If implemented with a focus on accessibility, efficiency and environmental performance, Kolkata’s tram system could evolve from a heritage symbol into a practical component of a more climate-conscious urban transport network.
