Kolkata Traffic Advisory: Major Roads Shut for Kali Puja

Kolkata Police will close several major roads and divert public transport across the city from 4pm on Sunday, November 8, to 4am on Monday, November 9, as residents gather for Kali Puja and Diwali celebrations. The restrictions cover Central, North and South Calcutta, Garden Reach and adjoining areas, with further changes possible depending on traffic conditions.

In Central Calcutta, Bankim Chatterjee Street, Surya Sen Street, Shyama Charan Dey Street and College Street will be closed to traffic, along with the stretch of Bidhan Sarani between MG Road and Vivekananda Road. Vehicles entering or leaving properties along the affected roads will be allowed, according to the advisory.

North Calcutta restrictions will cover Raja Ram Mohan Roy Sarani on two stretches between Vivekananda Road, MG Road and BB Ganguly Street, as well as Bhim Ghosh Lane and Keshab Chandra Sen Street. In South Calcutta, closures will affect Rashbehari Avenue, part of Chetla Central Road, Tollygunge Road between Chandra Mondal Lane and Rashbehari Avenue, Lenin Road and the northern channel of Southern Avenue near Karunamoyee Kali Mandir.

In Garden Reach and adjoining areas, Mudiali Road, Bagdipara Road, Jeliapara Road and Paharpur Road will remain shut during the notified period. SN Banerjee Road will also be closed between Rani Rashmoni Road and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road. Traffic on Paharpur Road may be regulated or diverted as required.

The police have also announced one-way arrangements and diversions. Jadulal Mullick Road and Baishnab Seth Street will carry traffic from north to south, while Kailash Bose Street will operate one-way from east to west. In Sahanagar, vehicles will move from west to east between Pratapaditya Road and Tollygunge Road.

Several bus services will be affected. Route 17A buses will be diverted through Rashbehari Avenue, SP Mukherjee Road and Hazra Road in both directions. Buses crossing the College Street-MG Road area will be routed through MG Road, APC Roy Road and Vivekananda Road. Mini-buses serving Parnasree and Rabindra Nagar may use Taratala Road, State Garage and Upen Banerjee Road instead of Banamali Naskar Road.

Selected west-bound buses, including routes S-31, SD-4/1, 21 and Silpara-Sealdah mini-buses, may be diverted through Biren Roy Road East. North-bound traffic on Strand Road approaching Howrah Bridge will be diverted to the Brabourne Road flyover. One-way restrictions on Strand Road and Brabourne Road will begin at 6am on November 8, two hours earlier than the usual 8am schedule.

On SN Banerjee Road, vehicles will be diverted from Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road towards NC Street, Ganesh Chandra Avenue and CR Avenue. Buses may also be diverted from Moulali crossing. Kolkata Police said the restrictions and diversions may be adjusted according to traffic requirements during the festive period.
