Kolkata Metro Solar Push Cuts Costs for Commuters

Kolkata’s public transport network is adding more renewable power to railway infrastructure, with a new rooftop solar installation at Jessore Road Metro station signalling a wider shift towards cleaner energy use in the city’s mass-transit system. The move matters beyond electricity savings: railway rooftops and operational spaces offer a significant opportunity to reduce the carbon intensity of everyday urban mobility without consuming additional land.

The 500 kWp solar plant at Jessore Road station on the Yellow Line was commissioned in July 2026. It is designed to generate about 1,800 units of electricity a day, primarily supporting the station’s lighting, lifts, escalators and other auxiliary requirements. Any surplus generation can be supplied to the Metro network. The installation is expected to reduce annual electricity expenditure by around ₹50 lakh, according to Metro Railway.The project is part of a much larger renewable-energy expansion planned across Kolkata Metro. Contracts have reportedly been awarded for another 6.5 MWp of rooftop solar capacity at locations including Noapara, areas around Jessore Road and railway service buildings. A further 13 MWp project covering the Noapara carshed and facilities along the Orange and Purple Lines is also in the pipeline, while another 10 MWp has been planned for implementation around 2027. If these projects are completed, the network’s installed solar capacity is expected to reach about 34.3 MWp.

For Kolkata, the significance lies in where this generation is being created. Rooftops above stations, depots and service facilities can produce electricity without competing with housing, wetlands, agricultural land or other scarce urban spaces. That makes distributed solar particularly relevant for a dense city where land availability is a major constraint.The wider railway system is moving in the same direction. As of June 2026, Indian Railways had commissioned about 1,161 MW of solar capacity across rooftop and ground-mounted projects. The network is also seeking to increasingly meet electric-traction requirements through renewable sources, alongside wind and hybrid systems.Kolkata Metro’s expansion therefore represents more than an energy-efficiency measure. Reliable renewable generation can help public transport control operating costs while reducing dependence on conventional electricity. For passengers, the long-term benefit will depend on whether such savings are sustained and translated into stronger, cleaner and more resilient transport services.

The next challenge is scale. Turning available railway rooftops into productive energy assets will require careful structural assessment, maintenance, grid integration and transparent monitoring. For a climate-stressed city such as Kolkata, expanding clean power within existing infrastructure could become an important part of building lower-carbon urban mobility without adding pressure on land.
