Kolkata Metro Purple Line Reaches Victoria Milestone
Kolkata’s Purple Line has crossed a significant underground construction milestone, with a tunnel boring machine breaking through at the under-construction Victoria Metro station after excavating from Khidderpore. The completed section is an important link in the Joka–Esplanade corridor, which is intended to connect southern neighbourhoods with central Kolkata while shifting more urban trips towards mass public transport.
The breakthrough involved TBM Durga, which completed roughly 1.6 km of tunnelling between Khidderpore and Victoria on July 10, 2026, exactly a year after excavation began. The work forms one of the parallel underground tubes planned through this section of the Kolkata Metro Purple Line. A second machine, Divya, is working on the corresponding tunnel, keeping the wider underground construction programme moving.For Kolkata, the importance extends beyond the engineering achievement. The corridor is planned to link Joka in the southwest with Esplanade in the city centre. At present, Purple Line services operate on the elevated Joka–Majerhat section, leaving the central-city connection incomplete. Once the remaining infrastructure is commissioned, passengers from southern areas could gain a more direct public transport route towards major employment, commercial and interchange zones.
The underground alignment is also significant because it avoids adding another major surface transport corridor through a highly built-up part of the city. Urban planners have long viewed higher-capacity public transport as essential to limiting road congestion and improving access to jobs and services. However, the benefits will depend on reliable operations, convenient interchanges, pedestrian access and affordable fares not simply the completion of the civil works.The next construction stages remain substantial. The twin tunnels are being developed towards Park Street, while the alignment towards Esplanade involves a different construction approach. The wider corridor includes underground stations at Khidderpore, Victoria, Park Street and Esplanade, creating potential interchange opportunities with Kolkata’s existing Metro network.Underground construction beneath a dense and historically sensitive city also requires careful monitoring. Earlier phases of Kolkata Metro expansion have demonstrated the risks posed by difficult soil and groundwater conditions, making ground stability, heritage protection and surface disruption important measures of project performance.
For commuters, the latest breakthrough does not mean immediate services on the new stretch. Track installation, signalling, station works, testing and statutory approvals still have to be completed before passenger operations can begin. The Kolkata Metro Purple Line will therefore matter most when construction progress translates into dependable, accessible and lower-carbon mobility for the people living and working along its route.
