Kolkata has gained two new direct air links with Madhya Pradesh, connecting the city with Rewa and Jabalpur. The services, launched this week, strengthen Kolkata’s access to two important centres in eastern and central Madhya Pradesh while reducing dependence on indirect journeys. For passengers, businesses and smaller urban economies, the change could make regional travel faster and more predictable.
The new Rewa-Kolkata and Jabalpur-Kolkata services are being operated by Alliance Air using ATR-72 aircraft. Both routes are scheduled three times a week, adding another layer to Kolkata’s existing network and creating direct links with cities that have historically depended more heavily on rail and road connections for long-distance travel.For Kolkata, the significance extends beyond passenger convenience. The city functions as a major eastern gateway for business, education, healthcare and trade. Direct connectivity with Rewa and Jabalpur can shorten travel chains for people from central India heading east, while giving Kolkata-based businesses easier access to markets and institutions in Madhya Pradesh.
The Rewa connection is particularly relevant as the city develops its own aviation infrastructure and seeks stronger links with larger urban markets. Jabalpur, meanwhile, serves a wider regional catchment across eastern Madhya Pradesh. Direct access to Kolkata could therefore support movement not only between city centres but also across surrounding districts that depend on these urban hubs.Industry observers say the commercial value of new regional routes will ultimately depend on sustained passenger demand, reliable schedules and competitive fares. Air connectivity can stimulate economic activity, but frequent services are most useful when they complement rather than replace dependable rail, road and public transport networks.There is also a broader urban-planning question. Aviation can reduce travel time across large distances, but its expansion needs to be considered alongside emissions, airport access and last-mile mobility. For passengers, a two-hour flight is only a meaningful improvement if reaching the airport and completing the journey at the destination remain affordable and convenient.
The latest services add to a wider expansion of Madhya Pradesh’s aviation network, with new routes linking smaller cities to larger economic centres. For Kolkata, the immediate gain is clearer regional access.
