KBR Park Traffic Plan Puts Hyderabad’s ₹3,000-Crore Flyovers on Hold

Hyderabad’s one-way traffic system around KBR Park has led the Telangana government to put planned flyovers and underpasses on hold, with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy saying the arrangement had saved the state around ₹3,000 crore.

Reddy said the one-way system was introduced as a temporary measure while the government considered multiple grade-separated projects to address congestion on roads around the park. Speaking informally to the media in Delhi, he said the traffic arrangement had instead emerged as an effective solution for commuters.

The Chief Minister said he had personally monitored the situation by visiting the area twice without his convoy. Based on his assessment that the arrangement was convenient for commuters and avoided a major public expenditure, the government decided not to proceed with the proposed flyovers and underpasses for now.

The decision places a temporary traffic intervention at the centre of Hyderabad’s response to congestion around one of its important urban green spaces. Rather than expanding road capacity through costly structures, the government is continuing with a road-management arrangement that changes traffic movement around the park.

Reddy did not provide details of the specific flyovers or underpasses that had been considered, their estimated individual costs, or the duration for which the one-way system would remain in place. The report also does not specify traffic-volume data, travel-time comparisons or the criteria being used to measure the arrangement’s performance.

The Chief Minister also spoke about Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase I, saying the state government had decided to take over the project following suggestions from the Centre and had entered into an agreement with L&T. He said the Indian Railway Finance Corporation had cleared the loan for the project, but that vested interests had obstructed disbursal.

No further details were provided on the terms of the agreement with L&T, the status of the loan disbursal or the next administrative steps for the Metro Rail Phase I takeover. The remarks connect the KBR Park traffic decision with wider questions about how Hyderabad will prioritise road expansion, traffic management and public transport investment.

For the KBR Park corridor, the immediate policy position is that the one-way arrangement will continue while the planned flyovers and underpasses remain on hold. The state government’s next steps will determine whether the traffic system becomes a longer-term substitute for the proposed structures or is reviewed after further monitoring.
