The India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across several parts of Karnataka from September 20 to 24, with coastal districts, north interior Karnataka, the Malnad region and areas around Bengaluru expected to receive rain. The forecast has been linked to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, and a yellow alert has been issued for the period.
The warning covers Karnataka’s three coastal districts. On September 20, parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi may receive heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and winds reaching 40-50 kmph. Uttara Kannada is expected to see thunderstorms, moderate rain and winds in the same range. From September 21 to 24, isolated parts of Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi may continue to receive heavy rain and strong winds.
North interior districts are also expected to experience unsettled weather. On September 20, isolated parts of Koppal and Raichur may receive heavy rain with winds of 30-40 kmph. Bagalkot, Belagavi, Bidar, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura and Yadgir may receive thunderstorms, moderate rain and strong winds.
The forecast indicates that the distribution of rain will vary by day. On September 21, isolated heavy rain is possible in Gadag, Haveri and Koppal, while several other northern districts may receive moderate rain. On September 22, isolated heavy rain is forecast for Bagalkot, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur and Vijayapura. On September 23, parts of Belagavi, Bidar, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi and Raichur may receive heavy rain, while on September 24, isolated parts of Gadag and Haveri may see heavy rain.
The forecast also includes the southern interior districts, including the Bengaluru region, the Malnad belt, Old Mysuru and central Karnataka. Bengaluru Rural may receive heavy rain on September 20 and 21, while Chikkamagaluru, Chikkaballapur, Kodagu, Kolar and Shivamogga are expected to receive thunderstorms or rain. On September 22, thunderstorms are forecast in Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Kolar, Mysuru and Bengaluru South.
On September 23, Bengaluru Rural may again receive heavy rain, while Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru, Shivamogga and Tumakuru may experience rain accompanied by strong winds. On September 24, isolated parts of Ballari, Chitradurga and Shivamogga may receive heavy rain. Moderate rain is expected in several other districts, including Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru South, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chikkamagaluru, Davanagere, Hassan, Kodagu, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru and Tumakuru.
The forecast indicates that temperatures may fall across the state as the rain develops. The weather system is expected to remain relevant through September 24, with the IMD warning covering both heavy-rain pockets and broader areas likely to receive light to moderate rain and thunderstorms.
