Jewar Airport Set for New Name as NCR Aviation Network Expands

The Noida International Airport in Jewar will be renamed Narendra Modi International Airport after the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved the proposal, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced following a Cabinet meeting on Friday. The decision comes as the greenfield airport prepares to add capacity to the National Capital Region’s aviation network.

Located in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, the airport is intended to serve passengers from Noida, Greater Noida, western Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the NCR. Its first phase has been designed to handle around 12 million passengers annually, while the wider project is planned across more than 1,300 hectares.

The airport is also expected to support cargo operations, attract investment and generate employment as its capacity expands. Its development is positioned as a complement to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, with the two facilities expected to distribute the NCR’s growing passenger load.

Access to the airport will depend on the development of a wider transport network. A ground transportation centre is being developed to connect passengers with metro services, high-speed rail links, buses, taxis and private-vehicle parking. Road and rail connectivity will be important for travellers from Delhi, neighbouring districts and western Uttar Pradesh.

Plans also envisage a link with the proposed Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail corridor. The implementation of that connection will depend on further development of the rail project and associated transport infrastructure. The airport’s effectiveness as a regional gateway will therefore be tied not only to terminal capacity but also to the availability of reliable connections beyond the airport site.

The project’s development plans include measures intended to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency, with a stated ambition of achieving net-zero emissions. These measures are part of the airport’s broader infrastructure plan as it moves towards operations and future capacity expansion.

The Cabinet’s approval marks a formal step in the proposed renaming. The airport’s longer-term role in the NCR will depend on the expansion of passenger services, the delivery of supporting road and rail links, and the growth of commercial activity around the facility.
