Indore Diwali Cleanliness Plan Adds Waste Trips and Mist Machines

Indore Municipal Corporation has announced a special Diwali cleanliness and air-quality plan that includes additional waste collection trips, full attendance of sanitation workers, mist machines on major roads and a citywide cleanup drive after the festival.

The corporation has prepared an action plan to manage the additional waste expected during Diwali and ensure its timely collection and disposal, according to an official release. Departments and officials involved in the arrangements have been briefed and instructed to implement the plan.

Additional commissioner Prakhar Singh said all sanitation workers had been directed to remain present without exception. Door-to-door waste collection vehicles will make additional trips, while extra vehicles and tractor-trolleys have been deployed to prevent garbage from accumulating in residential areas, markets and other parts of the city.

A special cleanliness drive will be conducted on the day after Diwali across major roads, markets, public places and residential areas. The corporation said the exercise is intended to restore cleanliness and order quickly after the festival and address the increase in waste generated during celebrations.

The plan also includes measures aimed at controlling dust and particulate matter. Mist machines will operate on major roads, while mist towers at Regal Square and Khajrana Square will run regularly. Two water sprinkler machines will also spray water as part of the air-quality measures. The civic body said these measures are expected to help keep dust and particulate matter in check.

The additional collection operations will also be used to communicate with residents about waste segregation and responsible disposal. Citizens will be encouraged to separate wet and dry waste and hand over waste only to designated collection vehicles. Non-governmental organisations are expected to participate in the campaign to widen public involvement in the civic drive.

The corporation has also linked the festival programme to local commerce and sanitation-worker recognition. A Diwali fair will be held at Nehru Park on November 5 to promote local and swadeshi products, with local artisans and small traders receiving space to display and sell their goods.

An updated ‘Know Your Safai Mitra’ module has been added to the Indore 311 app. Residents can use it to view details of sanitation workers serving their area and record feedback or appreciation for their work. The initiative is intended to recognise the contribution of sanitation workers and encourage more direct interaction between residents and the workers responsible for neighbourhood cleanliness.

Under the corporation’s ‘Ye Diwali RRR Khushiyon Wali’ campaign, usable items collected through a reduce, reuse and recycle drive are being handed over to families in need. The programme aims to reuse items that are no longer required by their owners while supporting recipients during the festival.

The civic body has appealed to residents to support waste segregation, use designated collection vehicles, choose local products and help maintain cleanliness and environmental quality during and after Diwali. The post-festival special drive is the next scheduled municipal action under the plan.
