Barwani Hostel Protest Ends After 450 Girls Seek Superintendent’s Return

A Barwani hostel protest involving around 450 girl students ended after district officials assured them that their grievances would be addressed within two days. The students had marched nearly five kilometres from Mata Shabari Awasiya Chhatra Parisar to the district collectorate on Tuesday to oppose the suspension of hostel superintendent Sarij Badole.

The students began moving towards the collectorate but were stopped by administrative officials near Dhobadiya Talab, where attempts were made to pacify them. The protesters remained firm on their demand for Badole’s reinstatement, according to the Times of India report.

Sub-divisional magistrate Bhupendra Rawat later met the students and assured them that their concerns would be considered within two days. Following the assurance, the students agreed to withdraw their protest. The report does not specify whether the administration has initiated a formal review of the suspension or whether Badole will be reinstated.

Assistant commissioner Ranjana Singh said that an inspection team had visited the hostel and found deficiencies in record maintenance and cleanliness. A show-cause notice was issued to Badole, and she was suspended after officials found her reply unsatisfactory, Singh said.

Badole disputed the circumstances behind the suspension. She said she had attended a departmental meeting in Bhopal on October 8 and 9 and had handed over charge of the hostel to another employee during her absence. According to the report, the suspension followed an inspection on October 10 that found the premises unclean.

The episode places the administration of residential hostels under scrutiny, particularly the systems used to maintain records, monitor cleanliness and assign responsibility when the designated superintendent is away. The students’ decision to march in support of the suspended official also indicates that the administration’s explanation and the hostel residents’ experience were not aligned at the time of the protest.

The immediate administrative task is to examine the students’ grievances alongside the inspection findings and the superintendent’s explanation. Officials have committed to addressing the matter within two days, but the report does not provide details of the review process, the specific record-keeping deficiencies or the steps planned to improve hostel conditions.
