Hyderabad Tungabhadra States Strengthen Regional Water Cooperation
The Centre and the governments of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka have reinforced their commitment to collaborative river basin management, with fresh discussions on the future of the Tungabhadra project highlighting the growing need for coordinated water governance amid increasing climate pressures.
The Tungabhadra water management meeting, chaired by the Union Jal Shakti Ministry in Karnataka, brought together the chief ministers of the three states to review irrigation requirements, reservoir operations and long-term water utilisation across the basin. The discussions focused on improving cooperation to safeguard water availability for agriculture and drinking water needs. A key milestone during the meeting was the inauguration of newly installed gates at the Tungabhadra Dam, replacing infrastructure damaged during severe flooding in 2024. The restoration is expected to improve reservoir operations and strengthen the reliability of irrigation supplies for farming communities dependent on the river system. Water resource experts say coordinated basin management is becoming increasingly important as changing rainfall patterns, declining reservoir inflows and rising water demand place greater pressure on shared river systems.
