Hyderabad Telangana Maternal Healthcare Gets Central Funding Boost
Hyderabad: Telangana has secured ₹200 crore in performance-linked financial support from the Union government to strengthen maternal and child healthcare services, with the funding set to improve public health infrastructure, neonatal care and the quality of services in government hospitals. The investment is expected to enhance healthcare access while supporting better health outcomes for mothers and newborns across the state.
According to health officials, the Telangana maternal healthcare initiative will prioritise upgrading facilities in government hospitals by expanding neonatal intensive care units, modernising labour rooms and operation theatres, and strengthening specialised maternal care services. The funding is also expected to support the establishment of midwifery-led care units, Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) wards and lactation management centres. Officials said hospitals managing a large number of deliveries will receive advanced monitoring systems to improve the tracking of maternal and foetal health during pregnancy and childbirth. The upgrades are intended to improve early detection of complications, support timely clinical intervention and strengthen patient safety across public healthcare facilities. The Telangana maternal healthcare programme will also contribute to upgrading hospitals in line with Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) while enabling more government institutions to achieve National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) certification. Health administrators believe improved infrastructure, standardised clinical practices and quality certification can strengthen public confidence in government healthcare services.
Public health experts note that investments in maternal and child healthcare generate long-term social and economic benefits by reducing preventable maternal and neonatal deaths, improving childhood health and lowering the burden on families. They also emphasise that strengthening primary and secondary healthcare systems is essential for achieving equitable access to quality medical services across urban and rural communities.
