Hyderabad: As forecasts indicate a strengthening El Niño pattern in the coming months, climate scientists and policy experts are urging Telangana to adopt proactive planning to reduce its potential impact on agriculture, water resources and vulnerable communities. They argue that early intervention, rather than emergency response, will be critical to protecting livelihoods and ensuring long-term climate resilience.

Experts say the El Niño impact in Telangana extends well beyond rainfall deficits. Reduced monsoon activity can influence agricultural productivity, drinking water availability, groundwater reserves, power generation and food prices, creating wider economic and social consequences for both rural and urban populations. Climate researchers recommend continuous monitoring of rainfall, soil moisture and vegetation conditions to help authorities respond quickly to changing weather patterns. They also advocate district-level contingency planning, timely weather advisories and faster delivery of agricultural inputs to enable farmers to adapt to prolonged dry spells. Agricultural specialists have observed that delayed rainfall has already affected crop conditions in parts of southern Telangana. They suggest that farmers consider drought-tolerant and short-duration crop varieties, adopt flexible sowing schedules and use moisture conservation techniques such as mulching, intercropping and balanced nutrient management to reduce climate-related risks.

Beyond agriculture, economists warn that the El Niño impact in Telangana could increase financial pressure on low-income households through higher food, fodder, water and energy costs. Reduced farm incomes and fewer rural employment opportunities may also accelerate migration and widen existing social inequalities, particularly among small farmers, tenant cultivators and agricultural workers. Water management experts stress that recurring cycles of drought and intense rainfall underline the need for stronger investment in climate-resilient infrastructure. They recommend expanding rainwater harvesting systems, groundwater recharge projects, farm ponds, local storage structures and micro-irrigation to improve water security during prolonged dry periods. Scientists also caution that below-normal rainfall could reduce water availability for irrigation, drinking supplies and hydropower generation. They suggest giving priority to essential drinking water needs while improving reservoir operations, groundwater management and long-term conservation measures. Warmer ocean conditions associated with El Niño may also affect marine ecosystems, with implications for fisheries and coastal livelihoods.

State agriculture officials have indicated that district-wise contingency plans are being strengthened alongside weather-based advisory systems. Measures including improved seed availability, climate-resilient farming practices, drip irrigation, crop diversification and pest surveillance are being expanded to improve preparedness before weather conditions intensify. Urban planners note that climate resilience is no longer limited to rural development. As Telangana’s cities continue to grow, integrated planning for water security, sustainable agriculture and resilient infrastructure will be increasingly important in reducing the long-term effects of climate variability and safeguarding both economic growth and public well-being.
