Hyderabad Telangana Drinking Water Stress Deepens Across Districts
HYDERABAD: Telangana is facing mounting pressure on its drinking water network as below-normal monsoon rainfall and prolonged dry weather reduce reservoir storage and groundwater availability across the state. With several major water sources recording significantly lower reserves than last year, authorities are stepping up contingency planning to safeguard supplies for millions of residents over the coming months.
The emerging Telangana drinking water crisis highlights the growing vulnerability of urban and rural water systems to climate variability. Reservoirs supporting the state’s bulk drinking water network have witnessed a substantial decline in storage, increasing concerns over supply continuity if rainfall does not improve during the remainder of the monsoon season. Official data indicate that the 29 reservoirs supplying water to treatment plants under the state’s rural drinking water programme collectively hold around 333 TMC ft, considerably lower than the corresponding level recorded during the same period last year. Several key reservoirs in northern and central Telangana have approached critical storage levels, limiting the volume of water available above dead storage and narrowing operational flexibility for water managers. The situation carries significant implications for Hyderabad and multiple district headquarters that depend on interconnected reservoir systems for domestic water supply. Water resource officials are closely monitoring storage in strategically important reservoirs while assessing supply scenarios over the next 45, 90 and 180 days. Authorities have also prioritised maintaining minimum reserve levels in critical reservoirs that support the Hyderabad metropolitan region.
Alongside declining surface water, groundwater conditions have also weakened. Recent monitoring indicates that average groundwater levels have fallen further compared with the previous month, reflecting insufficient natural recharge. Hydrogeologists note that continued dependence on groundwater during prolonged dry spells could increase extraction pressure, particularly in peri-urban settlements and rural communities where alternative water sources remain limited. To reduce immediate risks, government agencies are preparing emergency measures that include strengthening local drinking water sources, restoring existing borewells, arranging additional groundwater extraction where required and expanding rainwater harvesting interventions to improve aquifer recharge. These short-term actions are intended to maintain essential supplies while longer-term hydrological conditions remain uncertain. Urban planners and climate experts say the Telangana drinking water crisis underscores the importance of integrating water security into future infrastructure planning. Climate variability associated with recurring weather events has made reservoir management, groundwater conservation and rainwater harvesting increasingly central to building resilient cities and sustainable regional growth. They emphasise that improving catchment protection, reducing distribution losses and expanding decentralised water conservation can help reduce future supply shocks.
Policy discussions have also focused on utilising available river flows more effectively to replenish reservoirs linked to the state’s drinking water network. However, any such interventions would require technical evaluation, inter-departmental coordination and careful balancing of competing water demands. With much of the monsoon season still remaining, the scale of rainfall over the coming weeks will play a decisive role in determining water availability through the remainder of the year. Until then, conservation measures, continuous reservoir monitoring and timely contingency planning are expected to remain central to safeguarding drinking water access across Telangana.
