Hyderabad Water Security Plan Gets Fifteen Day Push

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad’s water utility has initiated a time-bound exercise to strengthen the city’s long-term water security, directing officials to prepare an integrated contingency strategy within 15 days as reservoir levels remain under pressure and the metropolitan region continues to expand. The move also includes plans to increase the use of treated wastewater for non-potable applications, signalling a broader shift towards more sustainable urban water management.

The new Hyderabad water contingency plan aims to improve the city’s preparedness for future supply challenges by aligning infrastructure development with projected population growth under the Comprehensive Urban Renewal and Expansion (CURE) programme. Officials have been asked to identify critical investments required across transmission pipelines, storage reservoirs, pumping stations and distribution networks to accommodate additional water expected from upcoming supply projects over the next two years. Water managers have also been instructed to prepare emergency response measures based on current storage conditions in reservoirs serving the metropolitan region. With one of the city’s key drinking water sources holding limited operational reserves, authorities are assessing multiple supply scenarios to ensure uninterrupted distribution if monsoon rainfall remains below expectations. As part of the planning exercise, the utility will review neighbourhoods that experienced supply disruptions during the previous summer and prioritise infrastructure improvements in those locations. Officials have been asked to complete planning, tendering and execution schedules within a defined timeframe to improve readiness before future periods of water stress.

The Hyderabad water contingency plan also places significant emphasis on improving operational efficiency. Measures under consideration include strengthening the management of water tanker services through dedicated filling stations, closer monitoring of digital booking systems and stricter oversight of service delivery. Better tanker management is expected to support equitable distribution during emergencies while reducing delays experienced by residents in water-scarce localities. A major policy direction emerging from the review is the proposed expansion of treated wastewater use across industrial facilities, construction projects, landscaped public spaces and large residential developments equipped with sewage treatment plants. Urban water specialists view treated water reuse as an increasingly important component of sustainable city planning, allowing high-quality drinking water to be reserved for domestic consumption while reducing pressure on freshwater resources. Experts note that large metropolitan regions are increasingly adopting circular water management practices to improve resilience against climate variability, population growth and recurring drought conditions. Expanding wastewater recycling can lower extraction from rivers and reservoirs while supporting greener urban development and long-term resource efficiency.

The utility has also reiterated that drinking water quality will remain a priority, directing field teams to investigate contamination complaints promptly and restore supplies only after laboratory testing confirms water safety. As Hyderabad’s urban footprint continues to grow, the effectiveness of the proposed measures will depend on timely infrastructure execution, coordinated planning and sustained investment in resilient water systems capable of meeting rising demand while adapting to increasingly uncertain climatic conditions.
