Hyderabad Solar Parking Project Targets December Completion
HYDERABAD: Telangana is targeting December 2026 for completion of a solar-powered car parking facility at the State Secretariat, combining additional parking capacity with on-site renewable power generation. The ₹26.81 crore project is expected to generate about 90,000 units of electricity annually and reduce the Secretariat’s monthly power bill by around 16%, according to the Roads and Buildings Department.
The project was reviewed during a meeting chaired by the Roads and Buildings Minister, who directed officials to accelerate construction and complete the rooftop structures within the December deadline. The proposed parking arrangement will include solar-panel-covered bays across the northern, southern and western sides of the Secretariat complex. Unlike conventional parking infrastructure, the facility is being planned as a dual-purpose asset, using the roof area above parked vehicles for electricity generation. Such installations can make better use of already-developed land while reducing the need for separate space for renewable-energy infrastructure. The project’s projected generation of 90,000 units a year will provide a relatively small addition to the State’s overall electricity system, but its value lies in linking energy generation directly to a large public facility. The approach could also reduce exposure to a portion of grid electricity costs over the operating life of the installation.
The review also covered road infrastructure being developed across Telangana under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund, Setu Bandhan programme and various road-over-bridge projects. Officials said 316 works covering about 3,918 km of roads have so far received administrative sanction, involving an estimated ₹5,159 crore. Road construction remains a major component of Telangana’s public infrastructure spending. During 2025-26, works covering 422.36 km were undertaken at a cost of approximately ₹868 crore, with several projects now reported to be nearing completion. Among the projects reviewed was the Narketpally bridge being developed under the Setu Bandhan scheme at an estimated ₹76 crore. Officials were directed to accelerate the work and coordinate with local representatives to address implementation issues.
The department also reviewed bridge and road projects across Karimnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Khammam, Mahabubnagar, Vikarabad, Nizamabad, Siddipet, Mahabubabad and Rangareddy districts. The Miryalaguda-Nandipahad bridge was singled out for immediate commencement after completion of the required technical procedures. For Telangana, the Secretariat solar parking project offers a practical example of integrating renewable energy into existing public infrastructure. Its broader significance will depend on construction quality, energy performance and long-term maintenance, particularly as government buildings increasingly face pressure to reduce operating costs and improve energy efficiency.
