Hyderabad Manikonda Road Demand Gains Resident Support
HYDERABAD: More than 200 residents from Manikonda’s residential communities took to the streets on Saturday, seeking expansion of a key road connecting Manikonda X Road near Marrichettu with U Colony. Residents want the existing 40-ft carriageway widened substantially, arguing that the current layout is struggling to support traffic, pedestrian movement and emergency access in a rapidly urbanising part of western Hyderabad.
The walkathon was organised by a residents’ collective and covered the stretch between Manikonda’s Marrichettu junction, Aditya Athena and U Colony. Participants carried placards and called for action from the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC), saying the road requires urgent intervention rather than incremental traffic management. Residents have sought a width of between 100 ft and 150 ft. They contend that the road’s present width does not reflect the requirements of the surrounding development and has become increasingly unsuitable as residential activity and vehicle movement have expanded. The dispute also points to a wider challenge facing Hyderabad’s peripheral growth corridors. Areas that have witnessed rapid housing development can experience a mismatch between built-up density and the capacity of supporting infrastructure. Roads planned or executed at smaller widths can subsequently become bottlenecks, particularly when apartment communities, commercial establishments and through-traffic begin sharing the same network.
According to residents, the road is shown as a 100-ft corridor in the applicable master plan but was developed at only about 40 ft. If verified, the gap between planned and existing right-of-way would raise questions around implementation, land acquisition and coordination between urban planning and infrastructure agencies. The safety implications are central to the residents’ demand. A narrow road can become difficult for ambulances, fire engines and other emergency vehicles to navigate when traffic is heavy or roadside parking reduces usable space. It can also create uncomfortable conditions for pedestrians, particularly where footpaths or designated walking areas are absent. The issue has remained unresolved for several years, according to residents, who said they have been seeking widening for about five years. They warned that further demonstrations could follow if the civic authorities do not respond to their demand.
For Manikonda, the immediate question is how the civic administration balances road expansion with the realities of land availability and existing development. Simply widening a corridor may improve vehicle capacity, but a durable solution would also need safe pedestrian infrastructure, drainage, junction design and provisions for public transport. As western Hyderabad continues to absorb new residential development, the Manikonda road dispute highlights the importance of delivering transport infrastructure alongside urban growth rather than addressing capacity constraints after congestion and safety concerns have already intensified
