Hyderabad Road Widening Focuses On Urban Connectivity
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has identified several high-traffic corridors for road widening as part of a broader effort to improve urban mobility and accommodate rising transport demand across the metropolitan region. The proposed interventions span residential, commercial and industrial areas, reflecting the city’s continued expansion and the growing pressure on its transport infrastructure.
The Hyderabad road widening proposals cover multiple strategic routes, including the carriageway beneath the PVNR Expressway, roads serving the Hitec City technology corridor, central city junctions and northern suburban stretches. While the authority has outlined the corridors for expansion, timelines for execution, project funding and land acquisition are yet to be made public. One of the largest proposals involves increasing the width of the service road beneath the PVNR Expressway between Pillar No. 117 and Aramghar Crossroads from 45 metres to 60 metres. The corridor serves as a major gateway for airport-bound traffic and daily commuters travelling between southern Hyderabad and the city’s commercial districts. Transport planners believe additional carriageway space could improve traffic flow during peak hours, provided it is integrated with efficient junction management. Other priority stretches include the GVK Mall Junction to KBR Park Road, proposed to be widened to 24 metres, and the Hitec City Junction to Madhapur Road, where expansion to 36 metres has been planned. Both corridors experience heavy daily traffic due to commercial activity, office developments and mixed land use. Experts note that improving these links could enhance connectivity within one of Hyderabad’s largest employment centres.
The plan also extends to neighbourhood roads in Neredmet, Sundarayya Park, Vijaynagar Colony, Jeedimetla, Alwal, Nallakunta and Himayatnagar. Several of these routes connect residential communities with industrial clusters, educational institutions and public services, making them important links in the city’s wider transport network. Urban planning specialists caution, however, that Hyderabad road widening alone may not provide a long-term solution to congestion. They argue that expanding carriageways should be accompanied by better pedestrian infrastructure, public transport integration, cycling facilities and improved intersection design. Without complementary mobility measures, additional road capacity may eventually attract more private vehicle traffic, reducing the long-term benefits of expansion. The proposals also raise questions regarding land acquisition, environmental impact and the preservation of existing urban green cover, particularly in mature neighbourhoods. Experts suggest that transparent planning and stakeholder engagement will be essential to minimise disruption while balancing mobility improvements with sustainable urban development goals.
As Hyderabad continues to grow as a major economic and technology hub, infrastructure upgrades remain critical to supporting future mobility. The next phase of the proposed projects will depend on detailed planning, statutory approvals and financing, with citizens and businesses awaiting clarity on implementation schedules and construction timelines.
