Hyderabad Pushes Rainwater Harvesting To Strengthen Future Water Security
Hyderabad is intensifying its focus on water conservation as civic authorities promote large-scale rainwater harvesting initiatives aimed at strengthening long-term water security and reducing dependence on future drinking water supply projects. Officials estimate that widespread adoption of rainwater harvesting could help the city conserve between 5 and 10 TMC of water annually.
The initiative is being led by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), which has accelerated the construction of rainwater harvesting infrastructure across residential, commercial and institutional areas. Water Board officials believe that improved rainwater capture and groundwater recharge will play a critical role in addressing Hyderabad’s growing water demand amid rapid urbanisation. Speaking during a water conservation awareness programme in Kukatpally, HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy emphasised that rainwater harvesting represents one of the most effective and sustainable solutions for enhancing the city’s water resilience. According to officials, widespread implementation could significantly reduce pressure on existing water supply systems while improving groundwater availability.
The Water Board has already completed approximately 24,000 rainwater harvesting pits across Hyderabad this year and is working toward a target of 30,000 pits. Authorities expect the programme to contribute to improved groundwater recharge across multiple urban zones where increasing construction activity and reduced natural percolation have affected underground water reserves. Alongside harvesting pits, HMWSSB is also implementing groundwater recharge measures through the conversion of non-functional borewells into injection borewells. Officials report that nearly 350 defunct borewells have already been transformed into recharge structures, with additional conversions planned in the coming months.
Urban water management experts note that rainwater harvesting provides multiple benefits beyond water conservation. Capturing stormwater helps reduce surface runoff, mitigates localised flooding, improves groundwater levels and enhances climate resilience in rapidly expanding cities. Authorities have also highlighted the importance of public participation in achieving long-term water sustainability goals. Residents, housing societies and commercial establishments are being encouraged to install rainwater harvesting systems and adopt water-saving practices that reduce overall consumption. Officials estimate that simple behavioural changes combined with water conservation infrastructure can significantly lower household water usage while strengthening the city’s ability to manage future demand. Property owners with larger plots are particularly being encouraged to integrate rainwater harvesting systems into their premises. As Hyderabad continues to expand and water demand rises across residential, commercial and industrial sectors, planners view rainwater harvesting as a critical component of sustainable urban development. The ongoing conservation drive reflects broader efforts to build a more water-secure and environmentally resilient city for future generations.
