Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has sought support from the Union Defence Ministry for the expansion of Adilabad Airport, proposing the development of cargo facilities, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) infrastructure, aircraft hangars and a civil aviation terminal alongside the Indian Air Force’s planned airport project.
During a meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Kartavya Bhavan in New Delhi, the Chief Minister described the Adilabad Airport project as a priority initiative for Telangana and highlighted its potential importance for both national defence and civil aviation. Revanth Reddy assured the Defence Ministry of the state government’s full cooperation in matters related to land acquisition and the transfer of utilities required for the airport’s development.
He emphasized that the project could significantly enhance Telangana’s aviation infrastructure while creating new economic opportunities in the region. The Chief Minister noted that several international airlines are currently exploring suitable locations for aircraft hangars and maintenance facilities, partly due to changing geopolitical and operational conditions in parts of Central Asia. He said Adilabad’s location and available land make it a strong candidate for such investments. According to the state government, the addition of cargo handling and MRO facilities could generate employment, support aviation-related industries and strengthen regional economic growth.
Officials believe the project could also improve Telangana’s attractiveness as an aviation and logistics destination. During the meeting, Revanth Reddy thanked the Defence Minister for approving the transfer of 83 acres of defence land for the Gandhi Sarovar Musi project. He also requested early approval for the proposed Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) facility near Devarakadra in Mahbubnagar district. The discussions reflect Telangana’s broader efforts to expand infrastructure, attract investment and strengthen strategic sectors such as aviation, logistics and defence-related industries.
