Hyderabad is facing a widening urban noise problem, with monitoring data for January to July 2026 showing repeated breaches across residential, commercial and designated silence zones. Readings reaching 71 dB point to growing pressure from traffic, construction and other city activity, raising questions about how expanding infrastructure is affecting everyday urban liveability.
Data from the Telangana Pollution Control Board shows that the problem is not limited to busy commercial corridors. Jubilee Hills recorded daytime levels between 56.7 dB and 70.5 dB, while Tarnaka ranged from 58.2 dB to 60.8 dB. Night readings also remained elevated in both residential locations. Under India’s ambient noise rules, residential areas are limited to 55 dB during the day and 45 dB at night. Commercial areas are also under pressure. JNTU recorded daytime levels between 69 dB and 71 dB, above the national daytime limit of 65 dB for commercial zones. Abids exceeded the prescribed commercial limit at night during several months, suggesting that traffic and activity are extending beyond conventional peak-hour patterns. The situation becomes more significant in areas intended to offer greater protection from urban noise. Zoo Park recorded daytime levels of 54–62 dB and nighttime readings reaching 68 dB. The University of Hyderabad recorded 68–71 dB during the day and 67–70 dB at night. Silence zones have stricter national limits of 50 dB during the day and 40 dB at night.
The gap is also visible against health-based benchmarks. The World Health Organization recommends keeping average road traffic noise below 53 dB and night exposure below 45 dB because higher exposure is associated with adverse health effects, including sleep-related impacts. For Hyderabad, the issue extends beyond environmental compliance. Persistent traffic noise can affect residential comfort, workplace productivity and the quality of neighbourhoods. It also matters for real estate, where proximity to major roads and transport corridors can influence how residents value homes and commercial spaces. Research on urban housing markets has found that exposure to road traffic noise can affect property values, underlining the economic dimension of the issue. Traffic growth, unnecessary honking and construction activity are among the main pressures identified in the latest assessment. Earlier efforts to use acoustic cameras for detecting excessive vehicle noise were discontinued after the pandemic, highlighting the challenge of maintaining enforcement tools over time.
A more resilient approach would require regular public disclosure of location-specific readings, stronger enforcement around silence zones and better coordination between traffic, construction and urban planning authorities. Green buffers and well-designed infrastructure can also help reduce exposure. For a rapidly developing city, Hyderabad noise pollution is increasingly a planning issue rather than simply a nuisance. Managing it alongside traffic, housing and infrastructure growth will be important to preserve healthier and more liveable neighbourhoods.
