Pune is moving closer to a more connected metro interchange at Shivajinagar, where a 150-metre pedestrian skywalk linking two metro corridors is nearing completion. The facility is being built near the Kamgar Putla area and is designed to connect the concourse areas of the existing Swargate–PCMC corridor and the upcoming Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Line 3. The project could reduce unnecessary road crossings and make transfers easier for daily commuters.
The skywalk is being constructed at an estimated cost of ₹5.5 crore. Once completed, passengers will be able to move between the two systems without leaving the metro station environment. The facility is expected to be ready by the end of August, with passenger access dependent on the required safety inspection and the operational readiness of Line 3. That connection is important because the value of a metro network depends not only on individual corridors but also on how easily passengers can move between them. A poorly designed interchange can add walking time, expose commuters to traffic and create unnecessary barriers for elderly passengers, children and people carrying luggage. Line 3 will connect Shivajinagar with the Hinjawadi region through a 23.2-km elevated corridor with 23 stations. The corridor has been planned to improve access to the large employment concentration around Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park and strengthen public transport links between western Pune and the city centre.
For Pune, the Shivajinagar connection also has wider significance. The existing metro network is expanding from individual corridors into a larger urban mobility system. As more lines become operational, interchange design, pedestrian access and last-mile connectivity will increasingly determine whether commuters see public transport as a practical alternative to private vehicles. The pedestrian link could also help address a common weakness in Indian urban transport: the gap between transport infrastructure and the walking experience around it. A fast metro journey can lose much of its benefit if passengers must negotiate congested roads, unsafe crossings or poorly connected station exits. Urban planners say such facilities should therefore be assessed not only by construction completion but also by accessibility, crowd movement, lighting, signage and universal design. These details matter for making public transport usable across different age groups and mobility needs.
The immediate milestone is the completion of the skywalk and the necessary safety checks. Its real impact, however, will depend on how smoothly Line 3 integrates with the existing network once services begin. For Pune, the larger opportunity is to build a metro system where changing trains is as simple as taking one. Better interchange infrastructure can shorten journeys, improve pedestrian safety and make the expanding network more useful for a wider section of the city.
