Hyderabad MPs Push for Faster Railway Infrastructure
Hyderabad’s railway infrastructure is facing renewed pressure for faster execution, with MPs from constituencies under South Central Railway calling for quicker completion of pending projects, safer track crossings and expanded suburban services. The demands were raised at an annual meeting focused on railway development, passenger facilities and safety across the SCR network.
Union Minister G Kishan Reddy attended the meeting as chief guest, where MPs reviewed ongoing and proposed projects covering station upgrades, foot overbridges, road underbridges, road overbridges and passenger amenities. Safety around railway tracks emerged as a major concern. Malkajgiri MP Etala Rajender called for a foot overbridge at Fatehnagar, citing frequent pedestrian movement across the tracks. He said around 1,000 people cross the tracks at the location every day and urged officials to treat the proposed facility as a priority. The demand highlights a wider urban mobility problem. As residential neighbourhoods expand around established railway corridors, informal track crossings can become dangerous links between communities. Providing safe pedestrian connections can reduce accident risks while improving access to stations and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Rajender also sought faster completion of 24 road underbridges and road overbridges being taken up in the Malkajgiri constituency. He called for additional MMTS services and new stations to respond to Hyderabad’s growing population and changing commuter patterns. Proposals included stations at Anand Bagh and Alwal-Venkatapuram, along with extending MMTS connectivity towards Yadadri. The MP also sought special trains and a long-term solution to waterlogging at road underbridges, an issue that can disrupt road-rail connectivity during heavy rainfall. The focus on drainage is increasingly relevant to Hyderabad’s transport infrastructure. Railway underpasses and road links can become vulnerable during intense rainfall if drainage capacity does not match surrounding urban development. Integrating flood-resilient design into new transport projects could reduce repeated disruption and maintenance costs. In the erstwhile Mahbubnagar district, MP DK Aruna reviewed railway projects and sought updates on proposals discussed during earlier meetings. She also pressed for faster implementation of sanctioned works and reviewed redevelopment projects at Amrit Bharat stations in Shadnagar, Jadcherla, Mahbubnagar and Gadwal.
Officials informed the meeting that a second railway line at Gadwal had received approval and that work would begin soon. Aruna also sought examination of the long-pending Gadwal-Macherla line and proposed rail links between Jadcherla and Miryalaguda and between Vikarabad and Tandur. The demands point to a broader need to align railway investment with regional growth. Better rail connectivity can support employment mobility, reduce dependence on private vehicles and strengthen links between Hyderabad and surrounding urban and semi-urban centres. For the region, the immediate challenge is not only sanctioning new infrastructure but completing projects within realistic timelines while addressing safety, drainage and passenger access. Faster delivery of these improvements could strengthen railways as a more efficient and sustainable component of Telangana’s expanding mobility network.
