Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Begins Service

The new Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper train began operations on November 1, introducing an overnight rail service with a reported journey time of about 16 hours between the two major cities. The train has 16 air-conditioned coaches, capacity for 823 passengers and fares ranging from ₹2,810 to ₹4,450 depending on the class and boarding station.

The launch was described by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a major change in the rail connectivity sector and as a service intended to offer passengers a modern travel experience, according to the report by Prajavani. The service links Bengaluru and Mumbai, two important technology, manufacturing, commercial and employment centres, through a long-distance sleeper connection.

The train is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 180 kilometres per hour. The reported travel time of approximately 16 hours places the service in the overnight intercity segment, allowing passengers to travel between the cities without using an air connection for the entire journey.

The reported fares are ₹2,810 for 3-AC, ₹3,630 for 2-AC and ₹4,450 for first-class AC. The exact fare varies according to the station from which the passenger boards, the report said.

According to the details published by Prajavani, the first-class AC coaches include shower-bath facilities, vanity mirrors, smart-glass technology and separate seating arrangements for couples. Passengers can also call an attendant using a dedicated button. Large glass windows are intended to provide wider views during the journey, while switchable smart-glass panels, reading lamps and coat hangers are among the other reported features.

The train also includes facilities aimed at passengers travelling with pets, including a separate cage arrangement, the report said. Dedicated seats and separate toilets have been provided for passengers with disabilities. The reported facilities in the AC coaches include laptop charging points, USB and Type-C ports, food trays and bottle holders.

The coaches are equipped with sensor-based vacuum bio-toilets described as being similar to those used in aircraft. For onboard safety, each coach has CCTV cameras and fire-extinguishing equipment, according to the report.

The launch adds a sleeper configuration to the Vande Bharat service network and places greater emphasis on long-distance overnight travel between metropolitan regions. Bengaluru and Mumbai have substantial business, employment and educational links, making journey duration, fare levels and the availability of overnight capacity important factors for passengers choosing between rail and air travel.

The service’s practical impact will depend on how the reported 823-seat capacity, class-wise fares and 16-hour journey time perform in regular operations. The information published in the supplied report does not include the detailed timetable, stoppage pattern or operating frequency. Those details will determine which parts of the Bengaluru-Mumbai travel market the new train can serve most effectively.
