Hyderabad Gains New Hub for Solar Irrigation

Hyderabad has gained a new base for solar-powered irrigation technology, with agriculture-focused social enterprise Khethworks opening an office in Sainikpuri. The move comes as farmers, particularly those cultivating small plots, face growing pressure from unreliable rainfall, limited irrigation access and rising costs associated with conventional water pumps.

Khethworks develops portable solar irrigation systems aimed at small and marginal farmers. Its technology seeks to provide an alternative to diesel-powered pumps while making irrigation more accessible for farmers who may not have the capital to invest in conventional systems. The company’s Hyderabad presence could support further development and expansion of its agricultural technology solutions. The city’s growing technology ecosystem also provides access to engineering, business and research capabilities that can support innovation in climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture and water management. Khethworks originated from the MIT Tata Center for Technology and Design, where its technology was developed around the irrigation challenges faced by small-acreage farmers in India. Its approach has focused on developing systems that can operate across different stages of the agricultural cycle.

The relevance of solar irrigation extends beyond replacing one type of pump with another. For farmers in areas with unreliable electricity or high diesel costs, access to dependable pumping can influence crop choices, planting decisions and the ability to cultivate more than one crop. Solar-powered systems can also reduce dependence on fossil fuels used for agricultural pumping. This has potential implications for both farm operating costs and emissions, although the environmental benefits depend on system design, equipment life, water-use efficiency and responsible groundwater management. That last factor is particularly important. Lower-cost pumping can improve irrigation access, but it does not automatically ensure sustainable water use. In groundwater-dependent regions, solar irrigation needs to be combined with appropriate water management so that improved access does not encourage excessive extraction. For small and marginal farmers, affordability remains another critical consideration. The initial cost of equipment, maintenance, financing and after-sales support can determine whether clean-energy irrigation technology becomes practical at scale.

Hyderabad’s new office is therefore relevant not only as a corporate expansion but also as part of a broader shift towards technology-led agricultural resilience. As climate variability affects rainfall patterns and farming costs, decentralised renewable-energy solutions could play a growing role in reducing farmers’ dependence on conventional energy sources. The larger opportunity will depend on how effectively such technologies reach the farmers who need them most. Combining affordable equipment with financing, technical support, efficient water use and local implementation could help make solar irrigation a more viable component of climate-resilient agriculture.
