Telangana’s Jurala reservoir is witnessing a sharp rise in water inflows, with around 80,000 cusecs entering the project from upstream catchments. Authorities have opened 10 gates and are releasing the incoming water towards the Srisailam reservoir, while part of the discharge is being utilised for hydropower generation.
The increased flow follows continued rainfall in upstream areas of Karnataka. Officials are monitoring the reservoir closely as further rain in the catchment could keep inflows elevated over the next several days. With inflows reaching 80,000 cusecs, the entire quantity is currently being released downstream. Around 40,000 cusecs is being directed through the hydropower system, while the remaining 40,000 cusecs is being released as floodwater. The arrangement allows authorities to manage the rising water level while making productive use of part of the flow. The water released from Jurala continues downstream towards Srisailam, adding to the wider Krishna river system. Officials expect the higher inflow levels to remain for another two to three days, depending on rainfall across Karnataka’s upstream catchment areas. Reservoir operations are being adjusted according to the quantity of water reaching Jurala.
The development comes during the monsoon period, when sudden changes in upstream rainfall can quickly alter inflows into reservoirs along the Krishna basin. Such fluctuations require continuous monitoring to prevent excessive storage pressure while ensuring downstream flows remain controlled. For downstream areas, the management of large releases is particularly important. Water discharged from Jurala eventually moves towards the Srisailam reservoir, making coordinated operations between projects essential during periods of high inflow. The use of a portion of the discharge for hydropower also highlights the multiple roles played by major water infrastructure. Reservoir systems are not limited to irrigation and flood regulation; they can also support electricity generation when water availability permits.
The immediate focus remains on tracking rainfall and inflows from the upper catchments. If Karnataka continues to receive significant rainfall, Jurala could continue experiencing elevated inflows, requiring authorities to adjust gate operations and downstream releases accordingly. For Telangana’s water management system, the episode underlines the importance of real-time reservoir monitoring and coordinated basin-level planning. With rainfall patterns becoming increasingly variable, timely decisions on storage and releases remain essential for balancing flood management, irrigation, power generation and downstream water security.
