HYDERABAD: Restoration efforts at Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu have gathered pace after authorities reclaimed portions of land occupied within the lake’s Full Tank Level (FTL), reinforcing Hyderabad’s broader strategy to revive urban water bodies and improve flood resilience. The latest clearance is expected to support ongoing lake rejuvenation works while highlighting the challenges of balancing ecological restoration with rehabilitation of vulnerable communities.

Officials removed temporary structures and unauthorised developments from sections of the lake’s notified FTL area, reclaiming land required for the restoration programme. The exercise forms part of a larger initiative to revive the water body’s storage capacity and improve its ability to manage stormwater during periods of heavy rainfall. Urban planners have long warned that encroachments within lakes and their buffer zones reduce natural water-holding capacity, obstruct drainage channels and increase flood risks for surrounding neighbourhoods. Hyderabad’s rapid urban expansion has intensified pressure on several lakes, making restoration projects increasingly important for strengthening climate resilience and protecting urban ecosystems.
