Hyderabad Gets New Gorakhpur Rail Link From October
HYDERABAD: Rail connectivity between Hyderabad and eastern Uttar Pradesh is set to improve with the planned launch of a weekly Amrit Bharat Express linking Gorakhpur with Charlapalli. The service is scheduled to begin in October and could strengthen passenger access between the two regions while providing an additional long-distance rail option for workers, students, families and other travellers.
The new service will operate as train numbers 22075 and 22076 on the Charlapalli-Gorakhpur-Charlapalli route. According to the notification cited in reports, the service from Charlapalli will begin on October 2, departing at 9.45 pm every Friday and reaching Gorakhpur at 6.25 am on the third day. The return journey will commence from Gorakhpur on October 4, departing at 8.30 am every Sunday and reaching Charlapalli at 5 pm the following day. The train is planned with 22 coaches and a passenger capacity of more than 1,600. It will operate at speeds of up to 130 kmph, subject to operational and route conditions. For Hyderabad, the significance extends beyond the additional service itself. Charlapalli has emerged as an important rail terminal for the city’s expanding northern and eastern urban areas. Better long-distance connectivity from the terminal can help distribute passenger demand across Hyderabad’s railway network and potentially reduce dependence on road travel for some journeys.
The service is also relevant to the broader migration and employment links between southern cities and northern India. Hyderabad’s technology, manufacturing, construction and services sectors attract workers from across the country, while students and families maintain regular connections with their home regions. A direct weekly train can provide another mobility option for these groups, particularly where air travel remains relatively expensive. The Amrit Bharat service is designed primarily for non-AC passengers. Reported passenger facilities include bio-toilets, CCTV surveillance and a talk-back system that allows passengers to communicate with railway staff during emergencies. These features are intended to improve basic safety and passenger experience without moving the service into the higher-cost premium rail category. The planned Gorakhpur service forms part of a wider expansion of Amrit Bharat connectivity. Railway authorities have already approved additional services connecting Gorakhpur with major cities, while more trains are reportedly being planned across the network.
From an urban mobility perspective, stronger intercity rail links can support more sustainable passenger movement by providing an alternative to private vehicles and short-haul air travel. The environmental benefit, however, depends on occupancy, service frequency, reliable scheduling and convenient connections between railway terminals and local public transport. The October launch will therefore be watched not only for its immediate passenger convenience but also for how effectively Charlapalli can function as a gateway for long-distance travel. Integrating the new service with city buses, local rail and other public transport will be important if improved intercity connectivity is to translate into easier door-to-door journeys.
