Hindustan Zinc Launches Zinc Alloys to Strengthen Infrastructure

Hindustan Zinc has launched two zinc alloys, VedAZ and VedAyush, for the galvanising industry, targeting infrastructure, automotive and manufacturing customers seeking more consistent coatings, improved corrosion protection and greater production efficiency.

The products are designed for manufacturers that use galvanising to protect steel and other metal components from corrosion. VedAZ is a zinc-aluminium master alloy intended to improve control over aluminium levels in galvanising baths. According to the company, this can support stable bath chemistry, more uniform coating thickness and a better surface finish.

The alloy is also expected to reduce dross formation and zinc losses during production, improving material utilisation and operational efficiency for galvanising units. Dross is a by-product formed during the galvanising process, and reducing its formation can help manufacturers use raw materials more efficiently.

VedAyush is a zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy developed to improve corrosion resistance, coating adhesion and durability. Hindustan Zinc said the product is particularly suited to challenging environments, including coastal and high-humidity locations and industrial settings. Its potential applications include infrastructure, automotive components, consumer appliances and power transmission systems.

The launch comes as corrosion remains a significant cost for asset owners and manufacturers. The report cited an estimate that corrosion-related losses in India amount to around 4.3 per cent of gross domestic product annually. The figure underlines the importance of protective coatings for infrastructure and industrial assets, although the supplied report does not provide further details on the methodology or source of the estimate.

Amarendu Prakash, chief executive officer and whole-time director of Hindustan Zinc, said there was significant scope to expand the company’s value-added zinc business across infrastructure, automotive, engineering and consumer products. He said customers required specialised grades tailored to their manufacturing processes and performance requirements.

Hindustan Zinc said it would use its integrated operations and alloy-manufacturing capabilities to develop customised products and strengthen engagement with downstream customers. The strategy marks a move beyond the sale of basic zinc products towards more specialised materials linked to the performance requirements of end users.

Through its wholly owned subsidiary, Hindustan Zinc Alloys, the company operates a zinc alloy melting and casting facility at Rajpura Dariba in Rajasthan. The facility has an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes. The company’s existing specialised portfolio includes HZDA-3 and HZDA-5 zinc die-casting grades, which are used in automotive, electrical, industrial hardware and consumer applications. Both grades have received Bureau of Indian Standards certification.

The latest products form part of Hindustan Zinc’s stated plan to increase the contribution of value-added products and move further up the zinc value chain. The company’s next focus will be on developing customer-specific applications across the infrastructure, engineering and manufacturing sectors.
