Himachal Pradesh has secured funding of Rs 140.90 crore for the construction and upgradation of 21 bridges across key districts. The approval, granted under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-III), aims to strengthen transport links in remote and hilly regions where inadequate infrastructure has long hindered mobility and economic growth. With the central government committing Rs 126.81 crore and the state contributing Rs 14.09 crore, the initiative is expected to provide all-weather access to villages that have struggled with unreliable transport networks.
The sanctioned projects cover a total bridge length of nearly one kilometre, spanning districts such as Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Lahaul & Spiti, and Mandi. These regions, known for their rugged terrain and seasonal disruptions, have often faced challenges in maintaining seamless connectivity, particularly during extreme weather conditions. The bridges will not only facilitate the movement of people but also ensure the uninterrupted transport of essential goods, medical supplies, and agricultural produce. In particular, major upgrades are planned for critical crossings over rivers and streams, where existing infrastructure has been unable to withstand increasing traffic loads and climate-induced wear and tear.
With an emphasis on quality and long-term sustainability, authorities have laid down strict guidelines for project execution. A Bridge Management Cell will be established to oversee construction, equipped with specialised personnel to conduct technical assessments and monitor progress. Before the commencement of work, hydraulic data, geotechnical studies, and structural designs will be thoroughly reviewed to prevent construction flaws. Independent inspectors will be deployed to ensure compliance with industry standards, conducting advanced integrity tests to verify durability. The focus on rigorous quality control measures highlights a growing shift towards accountability in public infrastructure projects, ensuring that investments translate into resilient, long-lasting assets for rural communities.
The approval of these projects comes at a time when Himachal Pradesh is intensifying efforts to modernise its transport infrastructure and enhance connectivity between remote settlements.
