Heavy Rain Alert: Six States Face Storms as Delhi Stays Dry

The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Keralam, Odisha and Telangana on November 4, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds expected across several parts of India after Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu crossed the south Andhra Pradesh coast.

The storm crossed the coast between Nellore and Narasapur, close to Ongole, between 3.30am and 5.30am on November 3, according to the IMD bulletin cited by the Times of India. It was centred over south Coastal Andhra Pradesh at 5.30am and was expected to weaken into a cyclonic storm by noon and a deep depression by midnight.

The IMD has warned of heavy rain at isolated places in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on November 4. Andhra Pradesh may also see thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 40-50kmph, gusting up to 60kmph, along with strong surface winds in some locations. A moderate flash-flood risk has been identified over some watersheds in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana until 5.30am on November 4.

The districts named in Andhra Pradesh are Bapatla, Guntur, NTR, Krishna, Eluru, Palnadu, Prakasam and SPSR Nellore. In Telangana, the risk covers Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool and Suryapet. The warnings are relevant to road users, local drainage systems and authorities responsible for managing waterlogging and weather-related disruptions.

Chhattisgarh and Odisha are also expected to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places. Both states may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds of 40-50kmph, gusting up to 60kmph. Jharkhand is likely to receive isolated rainfall, while the wider forecast indicates isolated to scattered rain over the state on November 3 and 4.

In the south, heavy rainfall is forecast over Keralam and Mahe, Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka. Parts of Karnataka may see thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 30-40kmph. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to experience thunderstorms and winds of 40-50kmph, gusting up to 60kmph. Isolated heavy rain is forecast in the region from November 5 to 7.

The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms over Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra, with winds reaching 40-50kmph and gusting up to 60kmph. Vidarbha may see thunderstorms with winds of 30-40kmph. Isolated to scattered rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on November 4, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura may receive rainfall between November 3 and 8.

Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh are expected to remain dry on November 4, according to the IMD’s seven-day rainfall forecast. The bulletin does not provide a specific temperature forecast for Delhi.

The weather systems behind the forecast include the weakening remnants of Cyclone Murasu, a Western Disturbance in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies, and upper-air cyclonic circulations over northeast Assam, east Rajasthan, the east-central Arabian Sea, the Karnataka and south Maharashtra coasts and the Comorin area. The IMD has forecast further heavy rain over parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on November 5, followed by continued rain risks in southern states through November 9.
