Pune Metro Expansion Adds 46 km, Network Set to Reach 100 km

Pune Metro expansion plans received a major push on November 3, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating a new phase and performing the foundation stone ceremony for additional corridors that are expected to add 46 kilometres to the city’s network. The expansion is projected to take Pune’s metro system to about 100 kilometres in the future, after nearly 55 kilometres of travel becomes available through the current network and newly opened routes.

The announcements were made at an event in Pune where Modi spoke about the city’s development, public transport, employment and the role of infrastructure in reducing travel difficulties. He said Pune’s growth was not limited to the city but also contributed to the wider objective of building a developed India.

According to the report, Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol provided details of the metro expansion at the programme. He said the new corridors would add 46 kilometres to the network beyond the approximately 55 kilometres that Pune residents would be able to travel by metro. This would take the planned network to around 100 kilometres. A further 50-kilometre expansion is also being planned, although the report did not provide details of the proposed alignments, construction schedule or completion dates.

The event marked both the inauguration of a new metro phase and the foundation stone ceremony for expansion works. The first phase of Pune Metro had earlier been launched with Modi performing its foundation stone ceremony in the presence of then state leadership, the report said. The latest programme therefore combines the opening of additional infrastructure with the formal start of further expansion.

Modi said metro development had accelerated across the country, claiming that about 1,200 kilometres of metro lines were operational in India and that more than one crore people travelled on metro systems daily across 26 cities. He also said metro projects were creating employment opportunities in Maharashtra and that public-private partnerships were being used for some projects. These figures and policy statements were presented during his speech, as reported by Pudhari.

For Pune residents, the immediate significance of the expansion is the promised addition of new routes to a network that is still being built out across the metropolitan area. The report did not specify the stations, route maps, fares, construction packages or opening dates for the 46-kilometre addition. Those details will determine how quickly the announced infrastructure translates into shorter journeys and better connections for commuters.

The Prime Minister also linked urban infrastructure with production, economic growth and poverty reduction. He said that higher production could support progress and help narrow the poverty gap. The speech included comments on direct benefit transfers, drought-affected farmers and water conservation in Maharashtra, although no new metro-specific employment figures or project financing details were announced in the report.

The next stages for Pune Metro will involve implementing the corridors for which the foundation stone ceremony was held, while authorities continue to develop the longer-term plan for another 50 kilometres of expansion. The reported target is to take the network to approximately 100 kilometres before pursuing that additional extension.
