Pune Metro Pink Line Set to Link Hinjewadi IT Hub With Shivajinagar

Pune Metro’s 23-kilometre Pink Line, connecting the Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar, is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a report by Navbharat Times – Pune. The Line 3 corridor is expected to provide thousands of daily commuters with an alternative to road travel between western Pune’s technology district and the city’s central areas.

The corridor, built at a reported cost of more than Rs 8,300 crore, will connect Hinjewadi with the District Court Metro station. The link is intended to create a direct public transport connection between the large information technology employment centre and Shivajinagar, which is one of Pune’s important urban and transport nodes.

The project is being presented as having two distinctive operational and environmental features. Train operations on the Pink Line will be handled by women train operators, a move intended to increase women’s participation in public transport employment and create additional opportunities in the sector.

The corridor is also planned to meet approximately 30 per cent of its electricity requirement through solar energy. According to the report, the use of solar power is intended to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources while supporting a more environmentally sustainable public transport system. The supplied report does not specify the solar generation capacity, locations of installations or the timetable for achieving the stated share.

The reported fare structure is distance-based. A journey of up to 2 kilometres will cost Rs 12, while travel between 2 and 4 kilometres will cost Rs 25. The fare rises to Rs 37 for journeys between 4 and 8 kilometres, Rs 43 for 8 to 12 kilometres, and Rs 49 for 12 to 18 kilometres. Trips longer than 18 kilometres will cost Rs 62.

The maximum fare on the existing Pune Metro network is reported to be Rs 35, making the proposed top fare on Line 3 higher for longer journeys. The difference will be relevant to commuters travelling across the full Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar corridor, particularly those who may otherwise depend on road-based transport for daily work trips.

The inauguration programme is also expected to include the foundation of Pune Metro Phase 2, involving four additional corridors with a reported investment of about Rs 13,500 crore. These are the Vanaz-Chandani Chowk Line 2A, Ramwadi-Vitthalwadi Line 2B, Kharadi-Khadakwasla Line 4 and Nal Stop-Manik Baug Line 4A.

Together, the announced corridors would extend Pune’s metro network to more parts of the city. The supplied report does not provide construction schedules, completion dates, station counts or funding arrangements for Phase 2. The immediate operational milestone remains the inauguration and commencement of the Line 3 service connecting Hinjewadi with Shivajinagar.
