Ahmedabad Riverfront Extortion Case Exposes Fake Cop Threat

An alleged fake police officer extorted Rs 10,000 from a youth near Vallabh Sadan at Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront after threatening to circulate photographs and videos of the youth and his female friend, according to a report by Sandesh. The accused allegedly demanded a further Rs 10,000 before the victim approached the Riverfront West police station.

The incident reportedly took place when the youth and his female friend were seated near Vallabh Sadan. A man approached them, identified himself as a police officer and claimed to have taken their photographs and videos. He allegedly used the threat of publishing the material on social media to frighten the two and demand money.

According to the report, the man then took the youth to an Indian Oil petrol pump in the Paldi area. The youth was allegedly made to scan the petrol pump’s QR code, through which Rs 5,000 was transferred online from his account. The accused allegedly collected another Rs 5,000 in cash, taking the total amount to Rs 10,000.

The alleged threats continued after the payment. The man reportedly warned the youth of serious consequences and threatened to kill him if he informed anyone about the incident. He also obtained the mobile number of the youth’s female friend and contacted her the following day while demanding another Rs 10,000, the report said.

The renewed demand prompted the youth to seek legal action. He went to the Riverfront West police station and filed a detailed complaint about the alleged impersonation, threats and extortion. The complaint places the incident within a public riverfront space that is used by residents and visitors, although the supplied report does not provide details about any security response or surveillance footage from the location.

During the investigation, police identified the alleged accused as Mohammad Hussain, also known as Haddi Kamruddin Sheikh, according to Sandesh. Police have initiated further legal action in the case. The supplied report does not state whether the accused has been arrested, the specific sections invoked in the complaint, or the outcome of any court proceedings.
