The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of India on Wednesday, with Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and other regions likely to face intense showers, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
The forecast covers a wide belt across central, eastern and southern India. Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Meghalaya, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The IMD has warned of very heavy rainfall in parts of Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. A thundersquall, involving winds of 50-60 kmph and gusts reaching 70 kmph, is likely over Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The forecast places several urban regions at risk of short-term disruption to road travel, public transport, drainage systems and electricity supply, particularly where intense rainfall is accompanied by lightning and strong winds. The warning also covers areas with major cities and expanding built-up zones across the central, eastern and southern regions.
Delhi and the National Capital Region are not under any significant IMD warning for Wednesday. The region is expected to remain generally dry, although rainfall activity is forecast to increase later in the week. The IMD’s current warning page shows no warning for Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi through September 28.
In Uttar Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh is likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall on Wednesday, followed by more widespread rain from Thursday. Thunderstorms and lightning are forecast over the region from Thursday, with heavy rain likely from September 25. West Uttar Pradesh is also expected to see increasing rainfall activity, with heavy rain possible from September 26.
Odisha is likely to receive widespread rainfall and very heavy rain at isolated places on Wednesday, along with thunderstorms and squally winds. The IMD has forecast a thundersquall over the state on Wednesday and Thursday. Jharkhand may see widespread rainfall and isolated heavy rain, while Bihar is expected to receive scattered rainfall on Wednesday and heavy rain from Thursday. Very heavy rainfall has been forecast over Bihar on Thursday and Friday.
Assam and Meghalaya are likely to experience widespread rainfall on Wednesday, with heavy rain at isolated places. Rain and thunderstorms are also possible in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Rainfall activity is expected to remain widespread over Assam and Meghalaya through Friday.
In central India, East Madhya Pradesh is likely to receive widespread rainfall from Wednesday, while Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh may see widespread showers. Chhattisgarh could receive very heavy rainfall at isolated places on Wednesday, with an extremely heavy rainfall spell possible on Thursday. Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra are also likely to receive widespread rainfall, with heavy rain at isolated places.
South India is expected to remain under an active rainfall spell. Coastal, North Interior and South Interior Karnataka may receive heavy to very heavy rain, while Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana could see very heavy rainfall at isolated places. The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over Coastal Karnataka on Thursday and over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Thursday. The warning period extends through the week, with rainfall activity expected to increase in parts of northwest India later on.
