These areas have attracted residential, commercial and industrial development due to improved connectivity and rising economic activity. However, urban planners note that expansion alone cannot define a successful city model. The challenge for rapidly growing urban centres is ensuring that new development is supported by reliable civic infrastructure and does not increase pressure on natural resources.
