Gurugram Millennium City expands water supply capacity
Gurugram’s drinking water capacity is set to increase with approval for a new 100 MLD treatment facility at the Basai water treatment plant. The expansion, along with additional storage infrastructure, is aimed at strengthening supply reliability in a rapidly growing urban region where rising population and real estate expansion are increasing pressure on civic services.
The decision was taken during a high-level state committee meeting, where the proposal for expanding the Basai facility received clearance. The project includes construction of a 100 million litres per day treatment unit and water storage facilities with a combined capacity of 600 MLD. The move is expected to improve the city’s ability to manage future demand and reduce stress on existing supply networks. At present, the Basai water treatment plant has a capacity of 270 MLD. Once the new unit becomes operational, the facility’s output will increase significantly, creating additional supply support for residential areas across both established and emerging parts of Gurugram. The project is planned for completion within approximately two and a half years.
The expansion comes as Gurugram continues to experience rapid urban transformation, driven by housing projects, commercial developments, and increasing migration. Urban planners note that water availability has become a critical factor in determining the long-term sustainability of growing cities. Strengthening Gurugram water infrastructure will be essential not only for new developments but also for ensuring equitable access for existing communities. Alongside the Basai project, another major water facility at Chandu Budhera is also being expanded. The location currently has treatment capacity of 400 MLD, while an additional 100 MLD unit is under development. Once operational, the combined improvements are expected to benefit a large number of neighbourhoods across old and new Gurugram.
Experts tracking urban infrastructure highlight that increasing treatment capacity must be supported by efficient distribution networks, water conservation measures, and better monitoring of consumption patterns. As climate variability creates additional challenges for urban water management, cities will need integrated planning rather than relying only on capacity expansion. The latest investment reflects a broader shift towards strengthening essential urban systems alongside physical development. For residents, the key outcome will depend on how effectively upgraded infrastructure translates into consistent supply, reduced shortages, and improved resilience during periods of high demand. As Gurugram continues to expand, maintaining a balance between economic growth and resource sustainability will remain central to the city’s future planning priorities.
