Gujarat Approves New Roads and Highways to Improve Travel and Support Industry

The Gujarat government has sanctioned a slew of strategic road development projects collectively worth over ₹247.35 crore.

The announcement follows a high-level policy meeting in Gandhinagar where state officials greenlit major upgrades to key expressways, arterial routes, and urban underpasses, marking a decisive push to fortify Gujarat’s economic corridors and regional connectivity. The approvals signify not just infrastructural growth but an effort to align road development with larger goals of industrial expansion, sustainable urbanisation, and resilient transport planning. At the centre of these plans is a ₹800 crore initiative for the six-laning of the Shantipura to Khoraj stretch of the Ahmedabad-Viramgam-Maliya road—a vital spine for Gujarat’s industrial heartland around Sanand, home to several manufacturing units and logistics clusters.

A senior official from the state infrastructure planning division highlighted that the proposed enhancements aim to “reduce transit bottlenecks, optimise industrial logistics, and unlock the full potential of Gujarat’s investment zones.” The upgrades are poised to play a critical role in improving the movement of goods and services, especially in the high-traffic Ahmedabad region and the broader industrial corridors that connect Gujarat’s manufacturing hubs to ports and inter-state highways.  Another focal point is the Bharuch-Dahej Road, which is set to be transformed through a six-lane elevated corridor. This upgrade, part of a larger resurfacing and widening effort across 188.9 km of critical roadways, will be executed by the Gujarat State Road Development Corporation Ltd, involving a substantial investment of ₹2999.8 crore. The project is expected to ease industrial transportation to and from Dahej—one of India’s largest petroleum, chemicals, and petrochemicals investment regions.

Modernisation efforts are also underway for other important stretches such as the Vataman-Pipli and Bhuj-Bhachau roads. These initiatives are being prioritised not just for economic reasons, but also for their alignment with sustainable transport objectives. By ensuring smoother traffic flows and reducing idle vehicular time, the projects aim to cut down emissions and improve energy efficiency across Gujarat’s transport sector. Urban traffic management will also benefit from newly approved underpasses that are designed to separate local and long-distance transit, thereby improving safety and streamlining road usage in densely populated areas. According to planning department insiders, these underpasses will be strategically located at congestion-prone zones and near key industrial intersections.

Officials underscored the government’s direction to expedite both construction timelines and land acquisition processes, ensuring minimum disruption to existing urban life while meeting strict quality benchmarks. Detailed project reports for upcoming mega-infrastructure projects like the Namo Shakti Expressway and the Ahmedabad–Somnath–Dwarka Expressway are already in the pipeline, further showcasing the government’s long-term vision to transform Gujarat into a model for high-capacity, eco-conscious road networks. While speaking to reporters, an urban transport expert emphasised the significance of these approvals, stating that “a robust, multi-modal road network is vital to sustaining Gujarat’s rapid industrialisation. These infrastructure decisions, if well-executed, could reduce last-mile gaps and create greener logistics chains.”

Sustainability has emerged as a cornerstone of Gujarat’s infrastructure roadmap. The integration of environment-friendly technologies in road construction, emphasis on circular construction materials, and streamlined traffic flow models are being embedded into the project planning process. A senior environmental consultant working with the state government confirmed that “all major projects are now being vetted through a climate lens, ensuring the infrastructure is both resilient and low-impact.” Furthermore, the state is actively leveraging public-private partnerships (PPP) and build-operate-transfer (BOT) models to finance and fast-track delivery of these projects. This approach not only mobilises private sector expertise but also reduces fiscal strain on the exchequer while maintaining public oversight.

The strategic importance of Gujarat within India’s industrial and logistics map continues to grow, especially with the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and increased international trade from the state’s ports. The road projects under approval are integral to realising Gujarat’s ambition of becoming a seamless, high-efficiency transit hub for both domestic and global commerce. Although the timeline for execution remains tight, officials have reaffirmed that the tendering and groundwork processes are being accelerated. The broader impact of this infrastructure drive, if realised in full, could extend well beyond economic benefits—supporting cleaner mobility, safer roads, and a more inclusive transport landscape across Gujarat.

In this pivotal moment for Gujarat’s developmental trajectory, the emphasis on sustainable road infrastructure is not only timely but crucial. As the state lays down the pathways to future growth, these infrastructure moves suggest a deliberate commitment to marrying economic ambition with ecological accountability.
