The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), under the aegis of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has set an ambitious target of certifying 50 billion square feet (sft) of green building footprint across India by the year 2047.
Newly-appointed National Vice Chairman of IGBC, C Shekar Reddy, expressed unwavering optimism regarding the trajectory of the green building movement, emphasizing the pivotal role of collaborative efforts and technological advancements in accelerating the transition towards a more eco-friendly built environment. India currently holds the distinction of being the second-largest registrar of green building footprints globally, with IGBC having certified an impressive 11.675 billion sft across 13,380 projects. With a steadfast vision to secure the top spot internationally, the Council aims to significantly scale up its efforts, leveraging governmental support and innovative technologies to drive widespread adoption of green building practices nationwide.
C Shekar Reddy underscored the proactive role of the Indian government in promoting green building initiatives through conducive policies, incentives, and regulatory frameworks across 11 states. He highlighted the transformative potential of emerging technologies such as smart building systems, renewable energy integration, and building automation in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of green buildings. Moreover, IGBC’s comprehensive approach towards green building certification, encompassing 32 distinct ratings for buildings, underscores its commitment to quality and continuous improvement. Reddy emphasized the importance of nurturing qualified manpower, with over 7,000 individuals trained as consultants for IGBC ratings, alongside the availability of 8,300 certified GreenPro products.
To bolster awareness and engagement, IGBC conducts a range of initiatives including the International Green Building Congress, Green Your School programs, Architect Competitions, and the Indian Green League for Corporates. Reddy affirmed plans to expand these awareness campaigns and further strengthen IGBC’s presence through its 29 chapters nationwide. With a steadfast commitment to sustainability and collaboration across industry stakeholders, IGBC is poised to lead India towards a greener, more resilient future, setting a benchmark for global excellence in green building practices.
